    Prerequisites

In order to setup this solution you need to find a way to connect your system to the mobile network. You can do this by using an Internet connection or you can setup a wireless connection by attaching a GSM phone/GSM modem to your computer. To help you make a decision, we have prepared a webpage for you: Internet based SMS connections vs. GSM modem based (wireless) SMS connections. Depending on what you select, you need the following prerequisites.

Prerequisites for Internet based connection to the Mobile network

If you wish to connect your system to an SMS service provider over the Internet you need the following components:

Figure 1/a - Prerequisites for Ozeki NG SMS Gateway IP SMS connection

In this case you need to find an SMS service provider who can reach the mobile phones in your area. This SMS service provider should be able to provide SMS service through the Internet. To find such a provider, you can check our website where we list some of them: SMPP SMS Service providers. Once you have found such a provider, you need to sign up for their service to get the connection parameters. You can use these parameters to configure your Ozeki NG SMS Gateway software.

Prerequisites for wireless (GSM modem) connection to the Mobile network

If you wish to connect your system to the mobile network wirelessly, you need a GSM modem or GSM phone, that you can attach to your computer with a data cable. In this case your Ozeki NG SMS Gateway software will operate this phone and will send and receive SMS messages wirelessly. To setup this connection method, you need the following components:

Figure 1/b - Prerequisites for Ozeki NG SMS Gateway GSM modem connection

Your checklist (for GSM modem connection):

SIM Card - You can get this from your local mobile network operator.*
Modem - Use a Wavecom, Siemens or Multitech modem.
Data cable - Comes with the modem
Computer - Recommended: P4 3 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 500Mb free available space on HDD
Ozeki NG SMS Gateway - Download it from http://www.sms-integration.com
    MOM 2005

*The SIM card will come with a plan that will determine how much money you will spend on each SMS.

    System architecture

After you meet with the above listed system requirements, you can start to build your SMS system that will work as follows: If an error occurs in the IT environment MOM 2005 detects it and generates a critical error message. This generated message will be processed by MOM 2005. Its Command Notification Channel is in direct connection with the Command Line Tool of Ozeki NG SMS Gateway. With the help of this tool the generated message is forwarded to Ozeki NG SMS Gateway which processes it and sends out to mobile phones as SMS text message. Figure 2 demonstrates this process. Ozeki NG SMS Gateway forwards messages to the mobile network either through a GSM modem that is attached to the computer or it connects directly to the SMS center of the mobile service provider over the Internet.

Figure 2 - Components of the solution

Please note that it is recommended to start to build your SMS system with GSM modem connection as it is more secure and stable than IP SMS connection (over the Internet). If you wish to increase capacity you can attach more than one GSM modem to the computer or can still switch to IP SMS connectivity.

    Installation guide

    Figure 5 - Operator Name

The following option are about the e-mail address of the operator. If you want the operator to receive notifications also in email then fill in the respective fields on this page; if you do not want to enable this option, please just click on "Next" (Figure 6).

    Figure 6 - Operator's e-mail

If you want the operator to be notified by page, provide the values on this page in the respective fields and specify valid times for the notification. If you do not want to enable this option, please just click on "Next" (Figure 7).

    Figure 7 - Operator page

On the next page, enable "Notify this external command" option. Then provide the Operator ID, for example, "SMS Problems" and you can specify valid times for command notifications. By default the program always notifies by external command. Finally click on "Finish" (Figure 8).

    Figure 8 - Operator Command

Figure 11 - Operation Manager Administrator

A "Notification Group Properties" window appears. Here, you need to select the created operator, then click on "Add" button between the two tables (Figure 12). Choose an operator you wish to add from the available operators and then on the "Add" button between the two tables (Figure 12 ), if you have done it, you can see the created operator in the "Group Operators" (Picture 13). Click on "OK".

Then double click on "Notification Command Format" at "Global Setting Type" (Figure 15).

Figure 15 - Notification command format

Make sure that the "Use Windows command interpreter" option is not checked and enter these values:

    Full path to application:

    C:\Program Files\Ozeki\OzekiNG - SMS Gateway\SendSMS.exe

    Command Line:

    SendSMS.exe -h 127.0.0.1:9500 -u admin -p abc123 -r "+36301234567" -m "$Alert Name$ - $Alert Description$"

After "-h": provide the IP address of the computer on which Ozeki NG SMS Gateway has been installed.
After "-u": provide your username you use to log into Ozeki NG SMS Gateway. The default username in the program is "admin".
After "-p": enter your password used in Ozeki NG SMS Gateway.

You can change the $Alert Name$ and the $Alert Description$ values in the command line if you click on the select button on the right hand side (Figure 16).

Figure 16 - Set Notification format

When it is done, click on "security" tab at the top of the appeared window and uncheck this option: "Disable execution of custom responses on Management Servers" (Figure 17). Click on "OK".

    Figure 17 - Custom Responses

With these steps the configuration is complete and now the system can be tested.

    Step 3. Test the system

To test the system I will create a rule which will generate an alert and send the SMS message. It needs to know which rules are applied to the management computer. First, in the "Administration" menu select "Computers" sub-menu and then the "Management Servers". Then double click on the computer's name (Figure 18).

Figure 18 - Management Server name

A window appears and on the top of it, select the "Rules" tab. Now you can see which rules are applied to the management computer (Figure 19). Click on "OK".

    Figure 19 - Applied rules

From the "Management Packs" menu choose "Rule Groups". Then expand Microsoft Operations Manager and Operation Manager 2005 in it. Here you can see the groups of rules that are applied to the computer. You can see that the agent group is also applied (Figure 20).

    Figure 20 - Rule groups

Now a rule will be created and this will be the part of the Agent group: Expand the Agent group and right click on "Event Rules" and select the "Create Event Rule" (Figure 21).

Figure 21 - Create event rule

A window appears, select the type of the event: "Alert on or Responding to Event" (Figure 22).

Figure 22 - Event Rule type

Click on "Next". Now choose the provider name in the appeared window: "Application" (Figure 23). Click on "Next".

    Figure 23 - Event Provider

In the next step define a criterion for the event: e.g. click on 'From source': and type EventCreate and then select 'of type': and choose "Error" (Figure 24). Click on "Next".

    Figure 24 - Event criterion

I do not want to schedule this rule, so I leave the default setting unchanged (Figure 25) and click on "Next".

    Figure 25 - Event schedule

This step is about generating alerts. To see the created alert a Critical alert needs to be generated and its owner is going to be "Application Alert". To do this in the "Event Rule Properties" window select the "Generate alert" option. In the "Owner line" type "Application Alert" (Figure26). Click on "Next".

Figure 26 - Event alert properties

If you want to treat all alerts as a new alert then this option needs to be unchecked: "Suppress duplicate alerts" (Figure 27). Click on "Next".

    Figure 27 - Alert suppression

You a response to this alert can be created by sending a notification to the Notification Group: Click on "Add" and select the "Send a notification to a Notification Group" option. Select a "Notification group you wish to alert" (Figure 28), for example, Operations Manager Administrators (Figure 29).Click on "OK" and "Next".

    Figure 28 - Event response

Figure 29 - Select Notification Group

When it is finished, the Notification Group and the type of notification appear in the list (Figure 30).

Figure 30 - Created Image response

In the appeared window, "Event Rule Properties-General", a name needs to be given to the created rule, so I enter in the line of Rule Name, for example, "Alert Generator" (Figure 31). Click on "Finish".

    Figure 31 - Rule name

When it is finished, you can see the created rule in the "Agent" sub-menu, in "Event Rules" (Figure 32).

    Figure 32 - Created alert

Then, to create an event I use the "Eventcreate" command at the "Command Prompt" in the "Administrator" menu. This command will generate an error in the application log: eventcreate /T ERROR /ID 1000 /L APPLICATION /D "Test Alert" (Figure 33).

Figure 33 - Error in command prompt

At the Operations console you see the generated Critical Alert (Figure 34).

    Figure 34 - Generated alert

At Ozeki NG SMS Gateway you can see that the message has been sent (Figure 35).

    Figure 35 - Sent message

These steps conclude the installation and configuration procedure. If you have followed the guide above correctly then you will have a swift, stable and working environment.
