This page provides detailed information and instructions on how you can adopt node notification module in Drupal web sites that allows users to subscribe to your SMS content and then you can send SMS notifications about nodes to these users. You as the administrator can specify the details of this solution during the configuration. Learn the steps of this configuration by reading the guide below and watching the video tutorials.

    Prerequisites

In order to setup this solution you need to find a way to connect your system to the mobile network. You can do this by using an Internet connection or you can setup a wireless connection by attaching a GSM phone/GSM modem to your computer. To help you make a decision, we have prepared a webpage for you: Internet based SMS connections vs. GSM modem based (wireless) SMS connections. Depending on what you select, you need the following prerequisites.

Prerequisites for Internet based connection to the Mobile network

If you wish to connect your system to an SMS service provider over the Internet you need the following components:

Figure 1/a - Prerequisites for Ozeki NG SMS Gateway IP SMS connection

In this case you need to find an SMS service provider who can reach the mobile phones in your area. This SMS service provider should be able to provide SMS service through the Internet. To find such a provider, you can check our website where we list some of them: SMPP SMS Service providers. Once you have found such a provider, you need to sign up for their service to get the connection parameters. You can use these parameters to configure your Ozeki NG SMS Gateway software.

Prerequisites for wireless (GSM modem) connection to the Mobile network

If you wish to connect your system to the mobile network wirelessly, you need a GSM modem or GSM phone, that you can attach to your computer with a data cable. In this case your Ozeki NG SMS Gateway software will operate this phone and will send and receive SMS messages wirelessly. To setup this connection method, you need the following components:

Figure 1/b - Prerequisites for Ozeki NG SMS Gateway GSM modem connection

Your checklist (for GSM modem connection):

SIM Card - You can get this from your local mobile network operator.*
Modem - Use a Wavecom, Siemens or Multitech modem.
Data cable - Comes with the modem
    Computer - Recommended: Intel P4 3Ghz, 2GB RAM, 500Mb HDD, Windows OS
Ozeki NG SMS Gateway - Download it from http://www.sms-integration.com
    Drupal web site

*The SIM card will come with a plan, that will determine how much money you will spend on each SMS.

    System architecture

If you browse through the prerequisites list and you make sure that you have all the requirements for Ozeki NG SMS Gateway, you can start the configuration. Your SMS system based on Ozeki NG SMS Gateway will work as follows: First, you need to enable node notification module. If you do so you can specify where the SMS subscription block will be placed on your web site. On this block users can subscribe to your SMS newsletters by providing their phone number and select "Subscribe" option. Then you will be able to send SMS notifications about a created node for subscribed users. Before you start to send SMS text messages you need to enable SMS notification, specify the content types and compose the body of the notification message. Finally, you need to save the changes. This process is detailed in the configuration guide below. After you save changes, Ozeki NG SMS Gateway will forward messages to recipients (Figure 2). It connects to the mobile network either with GSM modem connection or IP SMS connection that allows direct connection to the SMS center of the service provider over the Internet.

    Configuration guide

Before you start to configure this solution please note that it is supposed that you have already installed Ozeki SMS module. On a previous page you can see how you can do this installation process.

To enable Node notification module please follow the steps below and watch the video tutorial, as well.
Video: Send SMS from Drupal (part 2/2, configure your system)

First, start your browser and open your Drupal web site. Login with your username and password. Click on "Administer" in the menu (Figure 3).

    Figure 3 - Administer menu

Under "Site building" menu item click on "Modules" (Figure 4).

Figure 4 - Click on "Modules"

Enable "Node Notification" module and click on "Save configuration" (Figure 5).

Figure 5 - Enable Node notification module

Click on "Blocks" under "Site building" menu (Figure 6).

Figure 6 - Click on Blocks

Now drag the "SMS subscription block" and place it where you want it to appear on your web site. In our example it is placed in the right sidebar (Figure 7).

Figure 7 - SMS subscription block

On the web site the "SMS subscription block" appears on the right sidebar. Users now can subscribe to SMS newsletters by providing their phone number and selecting "Subscribe" option. They can unsubscribe your SMS newsletters in the same way selecting "Unsubscribe". Finally, they need to click on "Submit" (Figure 8).

Figure 8 - SMS subscription block appears

In "Site configuration" menu click on "Ozeki SMS module settings" and then on "Send node notification" (Figure 9).

Figure 9 - Send node notification menu item

Here, check "Enable SMS notification when a specific content is created" option then specify the content types. Finally you can specify the notification message in which:
$CONTENT_TYPE: will be the current content type
$SITE_NAME: will be the name of the current site
$NODE_INTRO: will be the title and description of the node

$NODE_INTRO will be sent as "node title - node body" in the message. Now click on "Save configuration" (Figure 10).

Figure 10 - Set the notification message

Now you can create a content and you can send SMS notifications about it to subscribed users if you enable this option. You can do this if you click on "Create content" and select the type of the content where node notification is enabled. Enter the title and the body. Click on "Notify users about this node" and here enable "Send SMS notification to users" option. Save the changes. To demonstrate this solution I created a test content (Figure 11).

Figure 11 - Enable sending SMS notifications to users option

If you take a look at Ozeki NG SMS Gateway you can see that SMS notifications have been sent out to subscribed users (Figure 12).
